FACTS ABOUT DIABETES IN KENTUCKY |

The Diabetes Solutions Summit will examine one of the most critical health-related issues in Kentucky. The magnitude of Kentucky’s diabetes problem is reflected in the following statistics: - Diabetes is the 6th leading cause of death in Kentucky
- Diabetes is the 5th leading cause of death in Kentucky by disease. Direct medical care costs and indirect costs (loss of productivity and premature mortality) of diabetes in Kentucky totaled approximately $2.9 billion in 2002.
- Approximately 1 in 8 (385,900) Kentuckians is believed to have diabetes. An estimated 8.9% (274,000) of the adult population of Kentucky is diagnosed with diabetes with an additional 29% of diabetes cases (111,900) undiagnosed.
- Kentucky ranks 7th in the nation for the highest percentage of the adult population with diabetes.
